Moissanite vs Diamond

When most people think about diamonds, they automatically think of the highest quality and most expensive stones on the market. Diamonds have been mined and traded for centuries, and their value is based largely on two things: rarity and hardness.

Moissanite is a relatively new gemstone that has been gaining in popularity in recent years. It was first discovered in 1893 by Dr. Henri Moissan in a crater created by a meteorite that fell to Earth. But it wasn't until the 1980s that scientists were able to create artificial moissanite gems. Today, moissanite is a popular choice for engagement rings and other jewelry, thanks to its unique sparkle and affordable price tag.

There are benefits and drawbacks to both moissanite and traditional diamonds. It’s important to understand the differences between them so you can make an informed decision. Moissanite diamonds offer several advantages over traditional diamonds. Here are a few things to consider:

Moissanites are more affordable than traditional diamonds, allowing you to get more sparkle for your money.

As moissanites are produced artificially, they will not be generally not sold unless they have a high clarity grade. This means that it is rare to find moissanites with obvious inclusions and blemishes.

Moissanite is lab created with minimal environmental impact, and they are conflict free for the same reason.

While moissanites are labeled as “colorless”, the gems can still project a yellow or grayish hue in certain lights.

Because moissanite diamonds are heated and treated during the manufacturing process, they come with a variety of color options that aren’t available with traditional diamonds.

Moissanite is the second hardest to diamonds on the Mohs hardness scale. Based on rankings from one to 10, diamonds are a 10 and moissanite is a 9.25-9.5. Moissanite is a very durable option for an engagement ring stone, especially since the material doesn't scratch easily.

Moissanite doesn’t have a cleavage plane, while diamond does. (This is an internal plane along which a diamond crystal can easily split). This gives a durability advantage to moissanite. However, this doesn’t help establish how hard a moissanite needs to be knocked until it chips or shatters.

As moissanite diamonds have fewer flaws than traditional diamonds, they often look larger and brighter at the same size as traditional diamonds.

Moissanites have a high refractive index and a strong level of brilliance, with a noticeable level of color. Although some people find them unnaturally sparkly, this can be an advantage if you’re looking for a very bright, eye-catching stone.

Personal preference is always a key factor when making a decision like this. Some people prefer the look of diamonds, while others prefer moissanite. Ultimately, the best way to decide which gemstone is right for you. If you are looking for maximum sparkle for your money, moissanite may be the right choice for you.
